Jennifer Martyn is an Assistant Professor in the School of Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies where she lectures in linguistics and applied French. She received her BA in French and English from NUI Galway, and her PhD in Sociolinguistics and Second Language Acquisition from UCD, for which she received an Irish Research Council postgraduate scholarship. She recently published a monograph Discourses, Identities and Investment in Foreign Language Learning (2022) with Multilingual Matters, andis the author of a number of other publications, including the edited volume Language, Identity and Migration: Voices from Transnational Speakers and Communities (Peter Lang, 2016). She is currently working on a textbook with Ryoko Sasamoto entitled Linguistics in a Multilingual World: An Introduction to Key Concepts (Routledge). 

Jennifer served as executive committee member of the Irish Association of Applied Linguistics (IRAAL) from 2017-2022, and serves as a reviewer for international linguistics and applied linguistics publications and series. She welcomes applications from prospective PhD students interested in the sociolinguistics of language learning/education, discourses of language learning, language ideologies, and language, gender, and sexuality.

My research interests include various aspects of Sociolinguistics and Applied Lingusitics, particularly the sociolinguistics of language education, discourses of language learning, and language learning and identity.

Teaching Interests

Teaching interests include, but are not limited to, Introductory Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Applied Linguistics, and applied French language with a focus on ethics and sustainability.
