Henrique Machado Barros
DR

Henrique M. Barros is an Assistant Professor in Innovation at DCU Business School. He holds a PhD in Business Studies from the University of Warwick (UK) and has completed further training at Harvard Business School in both Entrepreneurship and Participant-Centred Learning.
Henrique’s research examines how firms capture value from innovation, with a particular focus on intellectual property, and explores the intersections between innovation, entrepreneurship, and corporate strategy. His work has been published in leading academic journals, including Research Policy, Technovation, and the Journal of Technology Transfer. He has received awards from conferences organized by the European Academy of Management, the International Association for Management of Technology (EuroMOT), and the Brazilian Academy of Management.
Before joining DCU in 2021, Henrique held academic leadership roles in Brazil, serving as researcher, lecturer, programme director, and department head. He was a member of the scientific committees of both the Brazilian Academy of Management (ANPAD) and the Brazilian Association for Undergraduate Studies in Management (ANGRAD). Prior to his academic career, he worked as a patent examiner at the Brazilian Patents and Trademarks Office (INPI) and as a consultant in strategic innovation management. During his academic tenure in Brazil (2016-2021), he also collaborated as an ad hoc intellectual property consultant with a UK-based IP firm.
At DCU Business School, Henrique is currently Chairperson of the BSc in Marketing, Innovation, and Technology. He is an active member of the School’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and serves on the editorial board of RAE – Revista de Administração de Empresas. He also acts as an ad hoc consultant to the Research Support Foundations of the States of São Paulo (FAPESP) and Bahia (FAPESB), and reviews for several academic journals.

Henrique's research interest lies broadly in the strategic management of innovation. Currently, he has been working on topics related to Intellectual Property, Innovation Ecosystems, Open Innovation and Mergers and Acquisitions. Additional topics that might be of his interest are Technology Transfer, University Entrepreneuship, Digital Innovation, Secrecy, Board Interlocks, Frugal Innovation, and Sustainable Innovation.
