Dr Rob Lowney is Senior Learning Technologist in the Teaching Enhancement Unit (TEU), steering its learning technology group, which is comprised of learning technologists and learning technology support officers. He is based on DCU's St Patrick’s campus. He is a Senior Certified Member of the Association for Learning Technology (SCMALT), a Senior Fellow of AdvanceHE (SFHEA), a Senior Fellow of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SFSEDA) and the elected Industry Liaison Officer of the Irish Learning Technology Association (ILTA). In addition to steering the TEU learning technology group and contributing to the strategic development of the university's learning technologies, he also works with academic staff to enhance the teaching, learning and assessment practices on their modules with digital technologies. Rob has a particular interest in empowering academic staff to implement technology-enhanced assessment strategies. Other areas of interest include student partnership, flipped learning, mobile learning, mixed reality, artificial intelligence, virtual learning environments, learning analytics, critical data literacy, digital learning policies, academic integrity, learning design, reusable learning objects and diversifying and decolonising the curriculum. Additionally, he is a Moodle (known as 'Loop' in DCU) expert, and a member of its global Product Advisory Group (PAG), as well as an Apple Distinguished Educator. In 2025 he completed his EdD in Digital Learning with DCU Institute of Education, with a research focus on critical data literacy and learning analytics. He also holds a BA and MA from University College Dublin and an MSc in Applied eLearning from Dublin Institute of Technology. Prior to his current role in DCU, Rob held learning technologist positions in DCU and in Hibernia College. Furthermore, he co-ordinates a graduate training module about the fundamentals of university teaching and learning, as well as making guest contributions to other modules and acting as external examiner in other institutions.
