Research Projects

Title Role Description Start date End date
Standing Together for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Differences (STAND) Principal Investigator The overall aim of this research project was to explore the teaching and learning experiences of individuals in special schools in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland during the COVID-19 pandemic. This small scale study aimed to gather data from a minimum of 8 principals and/or teachers in Special Schools in the Republic of Ireland and a minimum of 4 in Special Schools in Northern Ireland. 30/01/2022 30/09/2023
A comparative study of the experiences of multiple stakeholders within autism special classes in mainstream schools in Ireland and the United States Researcher This project aims to explore and compare the experiences of multiple stakeholders (school leaders, teachers, care staff, pupils, and parents) within special (autism) classrooms in both Ireland and the United States. There is considerable debate in the literature on the benefits and disadvantages of special classes (Florian, 2014; Hick et al., 2019). Different countries organise and establish policies and practices for special education in different ways, however, and it is unknown how these compare and what is working in each setting. The study seeks to understand the benefits and challenges that stakeholders within special (autism) classrooms experience. The research will include the voices of children which meets a moral and ethical obligation to include the voices of children in research on inclusion. This is underpinned by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the National Strategy and Participation Framework (2015; 2021). To our knowledge, no current study has included the voices of all stakeholders to understand engagement and inclusion in special (autism) classes. Given the importance of inclusion for life-long independence of autistic students and the international focus on inclusive education for all (e.g. UN Sustainable Goal 4 to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and the UNCRPD), this research will address a significant research gap on the extent to which special (autism) classes support the engagement of autistic learners in mainstream schools in Ireland and the US. 01/02/2024 30/06/2025
