David Whittaker is an Assistant Professor in Technology Education at the School of STEM Education, Innovation and Global Studies, Dublin City University. He coordinates school placement for the Bachelor of Education in Technology, Engineering and Graphics (BEd TEG) and contributes to undergraduate teaching across Technology and Science Education programmes. Before joining DCU, David taught Technology subjects across Junior and Senior Cycle in post-primary education for several years, while also holding various middle leadership roles in IT coordination, programme coordination for Transition Year and the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (LCVP), and as a Year Head. He also collaborated with Oide on subject-based professional development initiatives and contributed to national curriculum development through his work with the NCCA on the development of the new Transition Year Programme Statement.

David is currently undertaking PhD research examining the treatment and development of spatial skills within Irish Technology Education, with a particular focus on curriculum analysis, classroom enactment, and opportunities for pedagogical innovation. He is a member of the Centre for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning (CASTeL) and the Technology Education Research Group (TERG).

Research Interests

David’s research interests include:

  • The development of spatial cognition and spatial skills in Technology Education;
  • Curriculum design, enactment, and interpretation within Technology subjects;
  • Practitioner inquiry and research engagement among Technology teachers;
  • Dissemination of research for practitioners to support evidence-informed teaching;
  • Research-informed approaches to school placement and teacher education;
  • The development of educational strategies and resources to enhance design thinking and problem-solving at second level.

Teaching Interests

David’s teaching interests centre on research-informed practice in Technology and Science Education, the development of practitioner inquiry skills among pre-service teachers, and the integration of research engagement into professional learning. He is also interested in supporting teacher development through school placement experiences that emphasise reflection, research and innovation.
