University of Sanctuary Discussion (Mon 19th April)

In this Instagram Live conversation, Dylan (Vice-President for Engagement and Development with DCUSU) finds out what it means to be a University of Sanctuary by talking to Dr Veronica Crosbie, the current Chairperson of Universities of Sanctuary Ireland (UoSI). DCU led the way, when it received the designation in 2016, and now seven of the ten universities in Ireland have joined this vibrant network. 

 

“Thank You, Frank” A Syrian Perspective on Angela’s Ashes (Tue 20th April)

Kinda Nassli, who arrived in Ireland as a refugee in 2019, will speak about her discovery of Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes on her journey to learn about her new country through its writing. Kinda will explore connections between McCourt and Syrian poet Nizar Qabbani, and links between the histories and cultures of Ireland and Syria. Paula Murphy, from the School of English, DCU, will provide some framing notes on Frank McCourt from an Irish literary perspective.

 

Researching Forced Migration (Wed 21st April)

A panel of 7 researchers, recently graduated from the MA in Refugee Integration (MARI), will present their findings and will situate them in the overall context of forced migration. They will look at issues such as relevance of knowledge for addressing humanitarian crises, importance of dissemination of knowledge for shaping of state and NGO policies, and relevance of research for future careers.

The session is chaired by Dr Agnѐs Maillot, Chair of the MA Refugee Integration. 

 

Sanctuary Scholarship Graduation & Celebration (Thur 22nd April)

The University of Sanctuary programme commenced in DCU in 2016. In 2020, the first four students graduated under DCU’s University of Sanctuary programme. These students were the first in Ireland to enter university under the Sanctuary initiative. Today, we mark their achievements. We will also launch our 2021/22 scholarships programme. Professor Lisa Looney will present the University of Sanctuary certificates. The event is chaired by Alketa Hotaj.
