Background

The ITS World Congress is the world’s largest and most prominent event focused on smart mobility and the digitalisation of transportation. The Congresses are the yearly celebration of smart mobility: they underline the importance of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), particularly in cities and regions where they are hosted, and provide an excellent platform that supports the education, thought-leadership, business development, and the overall steady growth of the smart mobility industrial growth. The challenge provider will be introduced in the kick-off session and will take part in the final presentation as well.

Our challenge

Population and production growth have resulted in a demand for higher capacities of urban transportation systems. Today, traffic is the number one occupier of public space in Hamburg. That has led to unsatisfactory conditions regarding traffic flow and traffic jams. Making more public space usable again for the residents therefore calls for innovation and creative approaches. Develop a concept for making more public space usable by interlinking sustainable transportation systems. Bear in mind the urban residents’ wants for cultural and social offers in public spaces.

Expected impact

International and national cities are highly interested in innovative sustainable solutions for efficient mobility in their cities. At the same time, cities must rethink their approach to climate-neutral mobility and lifestyles. This is causing many cities and companies to rethink. The ITS World Congress in 2021 therefore offers the opportunity to work on concrete ideas in partnership with Hamburg University of Technology.
