NiteLine listening service now available for DCU students 7 nights a week

Confidential listening and information service run by and for students of DCU and other universities around Ireland.

The DCU Students’ Union and DCU Counselling & Personal Development Service have joined forces to launch the NiteLine listening service for DCU students. This free, confidential, non-directive and non-judgmental listening and information service is run by and for students of DCU and other universities around Ireland.

NiteLine is available seven nights a week, from 9pm to 2:30am, by phone on 1800 793 793 or via instant messaging at niteline.ie.

Speaking about the service, Head of Counselling, Helena Ahern said:

“We all from time to time need a trusted someone to listen and to provide a safe, supportive, non-judgmental space to talk. Taking the courage to reach out for support from a trusted source is a healthy choice and starts the process of addressing the difficulties we face. We don't have to do things on our own - there are other safe options such as niteline.ie.”

NiteLine is based on the Samaritans model, and all student volunteers go through extensive training both before and during their time as active volunteers.

Colette Murphy, Vice President for Wellbeing DCU Students' Union, said:

“It's extremely important for supports to be available at night as this is the time that students often feel most alone. We're very proud to be introducing this initiative to help offer after-hours supports for students in need of a listening ear. It's often easier to chat to someone your own age also in college and we believe that Niteline is well-placed to facilitate this support."
