DCU Access and the Community

DCU Access broadens higher education participation through community engagement, offering tailored programs for local youth, the Traveller community, refugees, and collaborating with organizations to provide access information and routes like HEAR and DARE.

In addition to its work with schools, DCU Access actively engages with various community-based groups and regional organisations. This work supports DCU’s wider objective of broadening participation in Higher Education while promoting inclusion and diversity.

DCU Access empowers local young people outside the school setting, offering tailor-made programmes that inspire and support them in pursuing higher education. These programs, such as Change Makers, bring together young people from Youthreach Ballymun and participants in the Ballymun Initiative for third-level education (BITE) with DCU students who act as mentors, fostering personal growth and a sense of empowerment.

Higher Education participation rates in the Traveller community remain very low compared to the wider population. The Traveller and Roma Education Officer works with members of these communities. Activities include on-campus activities for Traveller and Roma students across Dublin from primary and post-primary schools. This work helps to introduce students to campus life and normalise the idea that University is an option for some, but for everyone.

DCU Access also engages with International Protection Applicants and refugees to highlight opportunities for University attendance. Initiatives in this area have included ‘College, What’s the Story’, an outreach project with Balseskin Reception Centre for asylum seekers.

Collaborating with local organisations, including sports clubs and social groups, strengthens our ties to the community. This collaboration allows us to provide meaningful programmes, information on the CAO application process, and entry routes like HEAR and DARE.
