Headstart in the Community
Headstart
Headstart in the Community looks to equip learners of all ages and backgrounds with the skills and confidence needed to make decisions about their educational journey. During the 10-week programme, participants learn about education pathways and supports, and are offered guidance in exploring the educational opportunities available to them.
Sessions are informative and participatory, focusing on building personal confidence and practical skills. Classes are held within the Ballymun Adult Education Service, Whitehall College of Further Education and Dublin City University, including tours of facilities and supports available to students at each campus.
As well as the course facilitators, the students engage with guidance counsellors, academic staff, student ambassadors, learning and writing tutors, and assistive staff.
To date, students not only participate but thrive in the Headstart in the Community programme. Many students have gone on to attend further education programmes such as Psychology, Medical Administration, Art and Sculpture, and Nutrition and Dietetics. These ‘first steps’ have provided them with options to advance to higher education. We are looking forward to seeing previous participants' progress and one day seeing them on DCU campus.
This course is a collaboration between DCU in the Community, the DCU Access Service, Whitehall College of Further Education and the Ballymun Adult Education Service of the City of Dublin ETB.
