Course Descriptor:
The following programme, facilitated by the Graduate Studies Offices, is designed to support academic colleagues who are involved in the annual progression process of a research student, such as a Head of School, Research Convener, Supervisor or Independent Panel Member within the supervisory panel. The session will go through the appointment of an Independent Panel Member (suitable for Heads of Schools or their nominees / Research Conveners) and the remit of the role (Heads, Supervisors, Independent Panel Members). This session is supported by both the Guidance on the Appointment and Remit of an Independent Panel Member document and in conjunction with DCU's Academic Regulations for Postgraduate Degrees by Research and Thesis. The Academic Roles and Responsibilities in Graduate REsearch Handbook may also be useful in understanding the role of all panel members in relation to postgraduate research supervision.

The aims of this programme are to:

  • Provide participants with the basis of the supervisory panel
  • Appointment of an Independent Panel Member
  • Explore the Independent Panel Member role
  • Review the role in the context of the Academic Regulations
  • Advise on how to implement research student progress review meetings
