DCU Innovation Campus
In January 2013, DCU opened its new Innovation Campus on a 9.5 acre site near the DCU Glasnevin campus. The DCU Innovation Campus is designed to act as a new national centre for innovation in the Cleantech sector, one of the fastest growing areas of economic activity and worth more than €5 trillion globally. The new campus, which is rapidly establishing a reputation as the location of choice for cleantech start-ups, SMEs and larger companies, is expected to drive significant green economy growth in the greater Dublin region. The campus has the unique advantage of being able to leverage the capabilities of DCU in terms of cutting edge teaching and R&D in areas such as renewable energy, sustainability, green finance, ICT, big data/smart cities and sensor technology amongst others.
Located on an 8.5 acre site in the heart of The Green Way – Dublin’s clean tech cluster – the Innovation Campus leverages the significant research expertise of DCU and its extensive partner network. Start-ups, SME’s and multinationals work alongside like-minded companies, using dedicated research labs and with direct access to highly trained, emerging talent.
The Innovation Campus is uniquely positioned to drive progress on critical issues in terms of energy, resource efficiency, water, the environment, health and society. Plans for the campus include the refurbishment of 80,000 square feet of office space for energy related technology companies, the commissioning of clean tech demonstrations centres, R&D labs, alternative energy showrooms, a conference theatre and training facilities.
In March 2014, DCU entered into a strategic partnership with Techshop for the establishment of ‘Techshop Dublin’ at the DCU Innovation Campus. Techshop is a membership based fabrication studio or ‘makerspace’ for rapid prototyping, providing hardware innovators with affordable access to extremely powerful tools, from 3D printers to CNC milling machines, laser cutters and high end CAD software. The new Techshop will be a magnet for attracting cleantech and other companies to the DCU Innovation Campus and will spawn the next generation of innovative, export focussed, job creating indigenous businesses.
