Patrick (Pat) Cadwell is Assistant Professor of Translation Studies at the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies. He is also a member of the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies there.

He teaches modules about multilingual crisis communication, terminology work, Japanese specialised translation, and translation theory. His research centres on ways in which the translation of language and culture can affect society and our social lives. He has published work on how people communicate and act in times of crisis, how they try to reduce the risk of disaster, how they come to trust or distrust each other, how they cope with new technologies, and how they work and learn together. In an increasingly globalised and technologised world, he sees the study of translation as a generator of useful societal and sociological understandings.

Research Interests

Pat has supervised PhD projects on the translation work of local government employees in Japan, development workers in Vietnam, and queer subtitling communities in China, as well as a postdoctoral project on how translators in the Swiss Confederation navigate technological change. He currently supervises PhD projects on translation in times of crisis among Arabic-speaking migrants in Ireland, at a Malaysian disaster management agency, and in the context of AI and non-discrimination. He also mentors postdoctoral research that investigates translation as a structural precondition for human rights.

He would welcome applications from prospective PhD students or postdoctoral researchers interested in: translation as a method of disaster risk reduction, multilingual crisis communication, and communities involved in paraprofessional or nonprofessional translation. He is particularly interested in working with students who wish to adopt sociological/ethnographic approaches in their projects.

He was a member of INTERACT: the International Network on Crisis Translation and COST Action IS1201 on Disaster Bioethics.
