Marginalized Voices as Data and Drivers of Change

Marginalized Voices as Data and Drivers of Change

Good intentions are not enough, and research is rarely objective. The notion of ‘seeing humanity’ is already framed by the histories, knowledge, and colonialism of ‘other’, and it shapes our research methodologies and what rises as ‘evidence’. As researchers and program evaluators with the goal of improving the human condition we must create and apply a critical frame to our work, one informed by those who must navigate these systems.

Transgender Medicine in a U.S. Context

Transgender Medicine in a U.S. Context

Charting the historical development of transgender medicine provides a window into our anxiety about gender and the power we give medicine to shape our lives. This presentation will explore various logic systems and how they interlock within institutional practices. By investigating how our logic around transgender medicine has developed, we can see the points in which change is possible. By deconstructing these moments, we can give voice to trans people and refashion how we theorize, research, and practice health care in ways that confer humanness and autonomy.

This presentation will investigate if the shifts evident in therapeutic guidelines and psychiatric documents that regulate transgender health care create more inclusivity and legitimacy for trans people.
