Academic biography

Mary Farrelly Phd, MMedSc, BNS, RGN, RPN
I lecture on mental health and nursing across a range of programmes.  My research interests are around social constructions of mental distress, media representation of mental health, development of nursing roles and developing  helpful responses to voice hearing and paranoia. Previously I have held a variety of clinical, management and practice development posts in mental health services and have also worked on national projects including the development of a Scope of Practice Framework for nurses and midwives and with the National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery on the development of frameworks to establish a clinical career pathway for nurses and midwives. I work with the Hearing Voices Network Ireland on the development of the network nationally and am a facilitator with a Dublin based Hearing Voices Group.
