South Dublin County Mayor Caitriona Jones joined Dublin City Lord Mayor Andrew Montague at the Mansion House on May 3rd to co-launch Dublin 5th Province (D5P), a new web based citizen engagement initiative led by Dublin City University on behalf of the Creative Dublin Alliance.
The purpose of D5P is to engage people about the sustainable development of Dublin over the next fifteen years. The project is exploring a range of policy areas in order to generate ideas for a better Dublin. Currently the website (www.fifthprovince.ie) is inviting citizens to discuss how we can encourage more people to cycle in Dublin; how we can improve the employment situation in Dublin; and how we can make Dublin a healthy city to live in?
New topical surveys, forums and blog entries will be posted regularly on the web site, allowing citizens to voice their opinions and engage with policy experts and other people interested in Dublin. The objective here is to promote informed discussion and deliberation about Dublin as a whole, while drawing out from each round of consultation, several coherent priorities that can be delivered by local government in Dublin.
The web site also allows users to collectively decide upon which sustainability topics should be discussed in future months. In a recent poll they chose Culture and Creativity as the next policy area for consideration, which will launch on July 2nd. Anyone who registers with the web site and answers a survey or engages with the blog or forum between now and the end of June will be in with a chance of winning a new bike.
Andrew Moore from DCU who heads up the D5P research said that "We have been receiving a lot of positive feedback about the project, but its real success depends on people getting involved, visiting the web site occasionally to share their ideas and encouraging others who care about the future of Dublin to do the same."
