Sea School

Galway Hooker Boat

Students building a traditional Galway Hooker boat

Galway Hooker Sailing Club in association with Scoil Bhríde, Shantalla have set up and are currently running a pilot program “Sea School.”

Children meet with local fishermen, boatbuilders, sailors, marine engineers to give them an insight into what future opportunities can arise from the marine industry.

Scoil Bhríde was recently awarded status of a European Blue School as a result of the Sea School program. 

    Through the link with the sailing school the students at Scoil Bhride Shantalla learn:

    1. How to sail, build and restore a Galway Hooker boat
    2. About marine life and conservation
    3. To sail
    4. To fish
    5. About local history and the local environment
