Research Opportunities for Graduate Students

 With internationally recognised staff, state-of-the-art facilities and a cutting-edge research programme, the School of Electronic Engineering DCU attracts the brightest, best, most imaginative postgraduates from home and abroad. 

 Our structured PhD enables you to carry out novel world-class research, and take part in programmes like Inspire and Telecommunications Graduate where you can develop vital skills in e.g. communications, commercialisation and entrepreneurship.

 Most postgraduate students get research studentships. Typically a studentship pays the full tuition fee and a tax-free monthly stipend, usually for a particular project, with a pre-determined topic, and funded by a specific agency. An interview and visit may be needed to assess shared interest. If you are in international student, an appointment will be for at least 12 months, to enable you to comply with visa requirements.

 Research opportunities at Masters, PhD or post-doctoral level may come available at any time of year. Details are usually posted in the electronic engineering research laboratories. Alternatively, you can email the Research Convener.

 

+ Application Procedure

 Interested applicants must submit the following:

  • A research proposal (of approx. 5,000 words) (guidelines below).
  • A letter and CV, including results for undergraduate and postgraduate awards (for each year of study) and any projects, dissertations or thesis completed.
  • Name of the faculty member supporting your application.

 You should only apply if a member of faculty is supporting your application. If there are none who have undertaken, or are interested in, research related to your proposal, it is unlikely to be accepted. You may self-fund or get funded for your PhD.

 

+ Writing a Research Proposal

 Read the guidelines on writing a PhD research proposal and ensure you:

  • Clearly outline your chosen research question.
  • Display evidence of your familiarity with relevant literature relating to your research question, including knowledge of published research from appropriate research journals.
  • Position your research question(s) in the relevant research literature.
  • Indicate the contribution your research will make to this body of knowledge.
  • Suggest a possible methodology that is suitable for your study.

 Applicants who have the support of a proposed supervisor may be invited to interview.  If successful, you will be required to apply formally to DCU via the Postgraduate Applications Centre. Please note that applications submitted to the PAC before faculty approval has been given, will not be considered.
