Open Opportunities in Engineering - FAQ
1. How long does it take to complete the Open Opportunities course?
One or two years depending on progress, then students will be assessed for transfer to one of the Level 8 honours degree
programmes in engineering.
2. What is the best way to register for the Open Opportunities course?
Give one of the DCU engineering programmes a preference on the CAO form. After round one offers you will be contacted directly. If you have failed to put DCU engineering on your CAO, you may fill out the expression of interest form at http://www.dcu.ie/engineering_and_computing/eng_foundation.shtml
3. When will contact be made?
After the First Round offers are released (Open Opportunity letters are usually sent out in the last week in August).
4. What is involved in the interview? What are the interviewers looking for?
The interviews usually take place in the first week of September. Two DCU engineering staff will meet with you for about 30 minutes. The meeting will be informal and will focus on
determining your suitability for a degree in engineering. Maths is critically important to engineering so the stronger your maths background the better. In addition it is very
important to have a good background in science, preferably physics. Points indicate an ability to manage a challenging
broad curriculum so the higher your points the better.
5. When will I know if I have an offer?
Within one week of the interview, and earlier when possible.
