Natural Language Technologies
This micro-credential provides students with a practical and theoretical grounding in the following core topics in modern Natural Language Processing: language modelling, language analysis, information extraction and language understanding. Students will learn how these problems are tackled using supervised and semi-supervised machine learning, and they will gain hands-on experience developing machine-learning solutions during the laboratory sessions. Popular benchmark datasets will be employed, including ‘noisy’ datasets containing text from sources such as Twitter and reddit.
On successful completion of this Micro-Credential the learner will be able to:
- Describe the applications of Natural Language Processing (NLP) in Data Science
- Illustrate how neural word embeddings underpin modern NLP systems
- Develop an English language model
- Evaluate an English language model
- Develop an English part-of-speech tagger
- Evaluate an English part-of-speech tagger
- Develop a sentiment analysis system for English
- Evaluate a sentiment analysis system for English
- Develop an English question answer/reading comprehension system
- Evaluate an English question answer/reading comprehension system
- Explain the unsolved problems in NLP research
- Summarize the ethical issues surrounding modern data-driven NLP
A Primary Honours degree, Level 8 in Electronic/Electrical/Computer Engineering, Applied Physics, Computer Sciences or other Cognate/Engineering Disciplines. Applications are also invited from diverse educational and/or employment backgrounds, with applications evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

There is no availability for a deferred entry onto a micro-credential.
