Research Day 2023

On Thursday, April 20th, the Faculty of Engineering and Computing hosted Research Day 2023. This event seeks to promote and celebrate the research from the faculty and our PhD students.

This year's theme, in anticipation of the new DCU strategy plan, was “Research Communications”. This theme looks to emphasise the importance of learning how to communicate and captivate the public with research in order for scientific knowledge and education to be advanced.

Research Day 2023 started with short welcomes and presentations from DCU President, Professor Dáire Keogh, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Computing, Jennifer Bruton and the Associate Dean of Research, Dr Pascal Landais. They were followed by two invited guest speakers, Professor Gabriel-Miro Muntean and Ciara Feely. Professor Muntean shared with us how his career progressed and what projects in his career had a large impact in his communications. Ciara Feely, who is currently a student at Insight UCD, gave a presentation on how social platforms can be used to increase research impact and how Researchers can use Social Media to their advantage.

The event continued with 2nd and 3rd year PhD students’d “Research Sessions”. These sessions tasked PhD students from the Faculty with communicating their research effectively in under 3 minutes. The winners of the research presentations include:

  • “Machine Learning in Smart Transportation” by Sen Yan
  • “Predicting Failure: An Investigation into the Effect of Steam In Place (SIP) Cycles on the Performance of PTFE Diaphragms” by Tara McMullan
  • “Multifunctional Bone Scaffolds Materials from Segmental Bone Defect Repair Fabricated via Layer by Layer Assembly” by Mohammad Ali Saheblzamani.

Attendees enjoyed the showcase of the 1st and 4th year PhD’s Graphical Abstracts during lunch. The winner for the Best Graphical Abstract was:

  •  “Immersive Mathematics - Design for All” by Muhammad Hani Menazel Al Omoush

The winner of the Postgraduate Accommodation Scholarship Scheme 2023 Muhammad Mubashar Saeed was also announced.

Dr Pascal Landais Associate Dean of Research at DCU’s Faculty of Engineering and Computing stated in his welcome message and introduction:

We publish our research to share our studies with other researchers, to build upon existing knowledge and to make discoveries, to inform and engage the public with our research, to advance scientific knowledge and education, to support policies and decision making and to encourage transparency and accountability towards open research. If publishing is important for our scientific mission, communicating about this research is crucial.
