Celebrating Four Decades of Dedication: Renaat Verbruggen Honoured for His Service to DCU

The DCU Faculty of Engineering and Computing recently marked a significant milestone in its history by honouring one of its longest-serving and most respected faculty members, Renaat Verbruggen, at a special event held within the School of Computing.

During the gathering, current Head of School Dr Andrew McCarren paid tribute to Renaat’s exceptional contribution to the University over a career spanning nearly 40 years. Dr McCarren reflected on Renaat’s deep commitment, not just to his students, but to the wider DCU community, highlighting his impact both inside and outside the classroom.

“From leading the MSc in Computing programme to lending his support to initiatives within DCU Arts, Renaat has been a true team player,” said Dr McCarren. “His dedication has left a lasting mark on the School of Computing and the University as a whole.”

Renaat joined DCU in 1985, during the institution’s early years. Photographs from DCU’s first graduation ceremony show a young Renaat standing among students not much younger than himself.

Since those formative days, he has played a pivotal role in the development of computing education at DCU and has witnessed and contributed to the University’s transformation into a leading centre for research and innovation.

Colleagues across the University speak warmly of Renaat’s humour, humility, and unwavering willingness to lend a hand. Known for his generosity and kindness, he is often described simply as “a true gentleman”, a colleague whose professionalism was always paired with personal warmth.

Over the years, Renaat has helped shape the academic journey of countless students while also supporting fellow staff members with the same care and respect. His presence has been a constant source of support and collegiality across the School.

The entire faculty extends their sincere gratitude to Renaat for his remarkable service. We also send our very best wishes to him and his family for a happy, healthy, and fulfilling future.
