ComputeTY 2025
The School of Computing at Dublin City University (DCU) once again hosted its annual week-long coding camp on the Glasnevin campus, welcoming almost 100 secondary school students. ComputeTY introduced Transition Year students to the world of computing and programming, offering them valuable insights into the range of careers available in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM). The programme also aimed to promote diversity within Ireland’s STEM talent pipeline.
This year, almost 50% of attendees identified as female, while just over 40% came from disadvantaged schools affiliated with DCU’s Access Programme.
Now in its twentieth year, the camp has been completed by over 5,000 secondary school students from across Ireland. We wish to thank the team at DCU Access for their ongoing commitment and support, as well as Fidelity Investments Ireland, who has been supporting the ComputeTY programme for the last few years
Throughout the week, students were introduced to Python programming and took part in lab sessions led by students from DCU’s School of Computing. The week concluded with a prize ceremony, where students were recognised with the BBC Micro:bit Competition Award and a Merit Award for those who demonstrated exceptional work ethic and enthusiasm throughout the programme.
On the final day, the students attended a career talk delivered by Margaret O’Halloran, Head of FI Technology, Liviu Nastase, Software Engineers, as well as Associate Software Engineers, Patricija Shalkauskaite and Martin Derwin,at Fidelity Ireland, providing the students an opportunity to learn about careers in technology. Speaking on their support for ComputeTY, Margaret O’Halloran said:
We at Fidelity Ireland are once again delighted to sponsor this year’s ComputeTY programme. We are very proud to support a programme that introduces programming and engineering to students from communities traditionally underrepresented in STEM.
