DCU Celebrates Student Innovation at 2025 Final Year Project Expo

The Faculty of Engineering and Computing’s Final Year Projects Expo 2025 was a vibrant showcase of innovation and long-term hard work, with nearly 400 final-year students presenting their final year projects. This annual event, now in its 30+ year legacy, continues to be one of the university’s largest-scale exhibitions. This year’s event was once again generously supported by lead sponsor Ergo, whose continued partnership reflects their commitment to fostering the next generation of tech talent.

Students from across all programmes within the faculty displayed the knowledge, creativity, and advanced technical skills they’ve developed during their time at DCU. The Final Year Projects Expo serves as a major platform for students to demonstrate their work to leading industry figures and potential employers. It also offers valuable networking opportunities with top-tier companies in the engineering and tech sectors, often leading to job offers in the days and weeks that follow.

This year’s Expo featured a wide array of diverse and impactful projects, many with significant environmental and social relevance. Among them was ‘LiveYourz’, a solution designed to help students secure safe and affordable accommodation while navigating legal requirements and accessing essential local services. Another standout was ‘Electricity Use In The Home’, a project aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Also on display was ‘Intruder Alarm Based on Home Assistant’, which utilises Raspberry Pi technology to detect intruders and enhance home security. These are just a few examples of the dedication and innovation students have poured into their work over the past year.

The day kicked off with a breakfast reception in the U Building, giving students the chance to meet and network with industry professionals in a relaxed setting. This was followed by an opening address from DCU President Prof Daire Keogh, Executive Dean Dr Jennifer Bruton, and Conal O’Donnell, Chief Operating Officer at Ergo - the Expo’s lead sponsor.

“The Faculty of Engineering and Computing’s Final Year Projects Expo 2025 was a wonderful showcase of our final-year students' creativity, skill, and innovation. It was a hugely proud moment for the Faculty as students shared the results of their hard work with staff, peers, and industry partners. We were also delighted that this year’s event was hosted in DCU’s newest building, Polaris, which itself supports future–focused teaching and learning in STEM and beyond. Attendees commented on the fantastic sense of collegiality, achievement, excitement and ambition evident at the event.” - Dr Jennifer Bruton, Executive Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Computing, DCU.

Conal O’Donnell also reflected on the event, stating:

“The DCU Expo was a fantastic event that highlighted innovation, creativity, and the collaborative spirit among students. The wide array of projects presented demonstrated the students’ strong commitment and hard work over the past year. We are proud to sponsor this event, reinforcing our partnership with DCU and supporting the development of our future workforce. We are continually impressed by the creativity and dedication these students exhibit, and we look forward to seeing the impact their work will have in the future.”

This year’s Expo was generously supported by headline sponsor Ergo, and nine prize sponsors: SAP, Intel, Davy, Infineon, Fidelity, KAESER Compressors Ltd, Veolia, and Dun & Bradstreet. Media coverage was supported by TechCentral.ie.
