This initiative will act as a key vehicle for the implementation of Ireland’s National Strategy for Marine Research ‘Sea Change’, A Marine Knowledge, Research and Innovation Strategy for Ireland 2007-2013’.
The ISGEI aims build capacity supporting industry needs in the in marine ICT sector and in doing so will realise the knowledge and research priorities set in Sea Change specifically in the area of Advanced Marine Technology. It builds on a legacy of strategic investment in the multi-disciplinary areas of ICT and marine supported by the National Development Plan and will make a significant contribution towards the Government’s commitment for a doubling of PhD numbers during the life of the current National Development Plan (2007 - 2013). The ISGEI will also act as a key mechanism for the realisation of Ireland’s SmartOcean Strategy. Launched in 2010, the SmartOcean Strategy was developed by a group of Industry, Research and Agency Partners and articulates a vision to establish Ireland as a world leader in the development and deployment of specialist ICT enabled decision support tools for the Global Marine Sector.
The ISGEI will focus on the delivery of a pipeline of graduates with specialist skills in Marine ICT to the 50+ companies in Ireland’s SmartOcean (ICT for the Sea) Cluster in association with an International Network of Private and Public Research Partners.
