Federico Fabbrini and Christian Kaunert receive Jean Monnet Awards

School of Law and Government awarded €450,000 in Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Actions

The School of Law and Government at Dublin City University had three successes in the most recent grants awarded by Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Actions, with a combined value of €450,000 over the next three years.

Triple success for DCU’s School of Law and Government

The European Commission has awarded 3-year funding to Professor Federico Fabbrini to establish a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, called REBUILD ('Recovery of Europe, Budget of the Union: Integration, Law & Democracy'). This is the first Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at DCU and builds on Professor Fabbrini’s success with the Jean Monnet Network BRIDGE, Jean Monnet project RELAY, and the Department of Foreign Affairs Communicating Europe initiative and consolidates the School and the Brexit Institute as leading centres for European law.

Meanwhile, Professor Christian Kaunert has been awarded a prestigious Jean Monnet Teacher Training project for three years worth €300,000, starting from January 2022. Professor Kaunert has also been awarded the first Jean Monnet Chair to be hosted by DCU and both of these successes will greatly enhance the School’s profile as a growing centre for European Studies in politics.

Dr Ken McDonagh, Head of DCU’s School of Law and Government said: “These successes in Jean Monnet Actions are a testament to the leadership and innovation that Professor Fabbrini and Professor Kaunert have brought to the School and I congratulate them both. Building on our existing Jean Monnet successes, these projects will consolidate the School’s reputation for excellence in European Studies. More importantly, these Jean Monnet Actions include outreach, engagement and impact that ensure these projects will not just produce outstanding research outputs but also deliver on DCU’s commitment to transform lives and society beyond the academy.”

About Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence REBUILD

The project is designed to explore the post-pandemic reconstruction of the EU economy, focusing on the "Next Generation EU" Recovery Fund, and examining its governance, financing and values. REBUILD, which is funded under the Erasmus+ programme, is the first project of its kind in Europe -- and the first Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence secured by DCU.

About Jean Monnet Teaching Award

Jean Monnet Teacher Training Grants are part of the prestigious LifeLong Learning programme of the European Union. The main aim of this project is to establish a new EU Teacher Training Academy (EUACADEMY), which will be recognised globally as a leader in the field. The EUACADEMY project will provide high-quality research-based, comprehensively multi-disciplinary teaching on a wide variety of EU integration issues to secondary school teachers as part of CPD training with a specific focus on socially deprived local communities.

About Jean Monnet Chair

The Jean Monnet Chair will be centred on the EU policy area of Counter-Terrorism, which has often been overlooked in teaching European integration. In this project, the team at Dublin City University under Prof Kaunert’s leadership will serve as a hub that connects to different stakeholders in the field of EU policing and counter-terrorism, i.e. policy-makers, civil society and the academic community. The project will provide the platform required for a fruitful exchange between policy-makers, civil society and academia.
