DCU Languages Week 2022

New DCU Languages Week to inspire senior cycle students

We are delighted to announce our first DCU Languages Week 2022 launched jointly by DCU’s School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies and Fiontar agus Scoil na Gaeilge which will take place from 28th February to 3rd March, 2022.

Ignite your passion for languages

This exciting new initiative is designed to engage and inspire senior cycle second level students to learn more about the art and culture of languages they love like French, German, Irish or Spanish. Or ignite a passion to learn a new language like Chinese or Japanese.

About DCU Languages Week

Supported by Languages Connect, DCU Languages Week 2022 comprises a series of events over four days, both virtual and in-person, giving students the opportunity to hear directly from language experts and artists and explore another side to modern languages.

Event organiser Dr. Lucia Pintado Gutierrez , Assistant Professor with DCU’s School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS) said: “Here at DCU, we know that learning languages is an exciting journey with great career opportunities ahead for graduates. This Languages Week allows second level students to get a sense of what it's like to learn languages at third level, explore different cultures and meet some fascinating experts and presenters.”

Benefits of learning a second language include:

  • Improved memory function, enhanced problem solving skills and higher academic achievement
  • Greater awareness and appreciation of other cultures
  • Exciting career opportunities - many DCU language graduates are in high demand across a range of industries including working as professional translators for EU institutions or working in localisation, gaming, education, tourism or international organisations and NGOs.

Fun competition!

In addition to attending virtual workshops or lecture taster sessions on campus, 4th, 5th and 6th year second level students participating in our new DCU Languages Week can also take part in a fun 10-word story competition in a chosen DCU language - Chinese, French, German, Irish, Japanese or Spanish. Enter here and win great prizes!

Languages Connect

DCU Languages Week is made possible thanks to the support from Languages Connect, an organisation which promotes social, professional and economic benefits of foreign language skills to principals, teachers, guidance counsellors, parents, students and stakeholders in the third-level sector.
