Policies and procedures
Protective Clothing Allowance
While the University will, as far as practicable, ensure a safe and healthy work environment, the responsibility for health, safety and welfare at work rests with each staff member. Staff should carry out their duties and responsibilities, taking due care about health, safety and welfare and should carry out such duties without putting at risk the health and safety of themselves, their colleagues, students and the general public. It is a condition of employment that staff fully avail of facilities provided for their safety and health at work which may include protective clothing and equipment. When it is necessary, for the protection of the staff member or for efficient and effective working, the University may require staff members to wear protective clothing or uniform.
Services Operatives are required to wear a uniform designed and supplied by the University. Each person will be given a new uniform every 18 months, and 4 shirts and ties per annum. A maximum allowance of €63 per annum is available for the purchase of protective footware. The cost of dry cleaning uniforms is reimbursed on submission of a receipt.
2. Grounds and Maintenance
The University will supply suitable protective clothing to Grounds and maintenance staff. A maximum allowance of €63 per annum is available for the purchase of protective footwear. The cost of dry cleaning uniforms is reimbursed on submission of a receipt. Staff may apply to the Finance Office for an advance to purchase items, as authorised by the Buildings Officer.
Technicians, who are required to wear white coats in the laboratories, are supplied with them by the University. These coats are bought and maintained by the Buildings Office who arrange distribution and collection for cleaning.
Print-room staff are supplied with white coats in the same way as Technicians. Any other areas where protective clothing is necessary should be brought to the attention of the Director of Human Resources.
