Sheelagh Brady Virgin Media show appearance

Sheelagh Brady contributes to Tonight Show panel on Criminal Justice System

Sheelagh Brady, a DCU School of Law and Government PhD Student and former member of An Garda Siochana, on 30th April was part of the panel on the Tonight Show, Virgin Media, contributing to the discussion about new statistics reportedly indicating a rise in anti-social behaviour, request for more armed members of An Garda Siochana and also more generally about the Criminal Justice System.

Sheelagh noted that there are limited resources within many elements of the criminal justice system, not just An Garda Siochana, and that without improvements in the overall system, any improvements in An Garda Siochana will be limited.

"We have to realise that if people are entering the criminal justice system at 11 or 12, then we have to have the capacity to allow them to exit, and likewise at all other stages," Sheelagh said while adding that a whole societal approach to the problem is needed.

When asked whether we needed more prison, Sheelagh noted that a more structured approach was required, one that needs to look at a more holistic approach, rather than looking at An Garda Siochana as one unique element, the prisons as another and so forth.
