Torsion of bars apparatus

The elastic deflection and eventual failure of beams in bending is related to the behaviour of the beam material in direct tension and compression.

However, there is another way of distorting material that occurs when it is twisted. In the simplest case a length of rod can be twisted about its longitudinal axis in such a way that no bending or direct stress is involved. This is called pure torsion.
