DCU Institute for Future Media and Journalism (FuJo)

Launched in 2015, the DCU Institute for Future Media and Journalism (FuJo) is a pioneering space to advance research and support innovation within the rapidly evolving media sector. For over 30 years, DCU has trained generations of Irish media professionals and encouraged creativity and innovation across the Irish media industry. FuJo builds on this rich legacy to place DCU’s researchers, graduates and partners at the heart of the historic transformations in media and journalism.

The institute brings together journalism and communication scholars from DCU’s School of Communications; data scientists and software engineers from two Science Foundation Ireland research centres – the Insight Centre for Data Analytics and the ADAPT Centre for Content Creation – as well experts in social science, philosophy and business from the School of Law and Government, the Institute of Ethics and the Centre for Cloud Computing and Commerce. FuJo is additionally guided by an industry advisory board representing traditional and digital media companies.

Principally, FuJo works with national and international partners across industry and academia to develop research and innovation projects, provide skills training, and to host industry focused public events. FuJo researchers are currently working on a number of journalism and media projects including:

  • Automatic Recognition of Gender in Media
  • Climate Change in Irish Media
  • Global Media Monitoring
  • How Newsrooms Work with Algorithms
  • Irish Media Election Coverage
  • Media Pluralism Monitor
  • Media and Elections
  • Reuters Digital News Report
  • Violent Online Extremism

FuJo is also developing two EU funded research projects examining digital and data journalism training, and translation tools for investigative journalism.

Building on industry partnerships, the institute hosts outreach events such as the News Impact Summit - held in partnership with Google News Lab and the European Journalism Centre - and the Election Aftermath, held in partnership with the Online News Association Ireland. FuJo also provides mid-career journalism training as well as journalism scholarships and internships for DCU students in collaboration with partners like Arizona State University, World Ireland Funds and Celtic Media Group.

The institute is currently developing plans for a news lab and sandbox storytelling space to support collaborations between students and practitioners of journalism, multimedia, computer science and data science.
