e-INFRASTRUCTURE AND SCIENTIFIC COLLECTIONS
Access to High Performance Computer Infrastructure is currently via ICHEC.
ICHEC provide 2 primary types of HEC services.
Full National Service
This full national service is the primary mechanism through which researchers gain access to the ICHEC resources. These national resources are allocated to 'user projects' which are categorized by project size. The projects are categorized based on computational requirements, number of researchers, duration and impact.
DCU currently have researchers participating in national projects in two of their three project classes. We have 6 researchers participating in three ‘Class B’ projects and 14 members participating in ‘Class C’ projects.
Condominium Access
The condominium access model allows organisations to provide very quick access to HPC resources for researchers with smaller computational requirements. Organisations purchase a condominium share which is a fractional allocation of the national HPC system. This resource can be accessed quickly by researchers as if it were a local HPC system. This model is a value-for-money shared service which can remove the need for researchers to manage local HPC systems or for the organization to dedicate financial and staff resources to the provision of local HPC.
DCU currently have 80 registered users of the ICHEC condominium shares.
