SFI have updated their Grant Budget Policy as of March 2023.
The policy should be followed immediately and referred to when preparing all budgets associated with a SFI Research Programme.
For grants that are live, the provisions of the policy can be adopted, where required, by using the flexibility afforded in the Grant Conditions (Letter of Offer).
In addition to terminology and language revisions to align with the updated Grant Terms & Conditions, this revised policy includes several new provisions:
- Student Stipend revised upwards to €19,000; SFI anticipates that this will be further enhanced, following the national review and consultation processes under way.
- Supports for non-EU/EEA Visa and Health Insurance (previously communicated)
- Several amendments have been included to support SFI’s commitment to changes in environmental and social policy/legislation, namely those that align with strategic developments in ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) and EDI (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion) relevant to the RD&I funding landscape.
- For ESG, these include the alignment of guidance on procurement with Ireland’s Green Public Procurement policy and guidance on sustainable travel.
- For EDI, these include supports for assistive technology and personal supports, and supports for caring/childcare responsibilities and companion travel for researchers when attending conferences.
- Other clarifications include those associated with teaching buyout, hiring practices, equitable pay, professional registration, etc.
More details can be found on the SFI website.

Communities of Practice to Co-create Two Codes of Practice for Knowledge Valorisation
The European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation is looking for a wide variety of stakeholders with an interest in
1) industry-academia collaboration for knowledge valorisation and
2) citizen engagement for knowledge valorisation to join communities of practice and contribute to the creation of two new codes.
The communities of practice will run from March until the end of June 2023. They will be coordinated by the European Commission and their work will take place entirely online with monthly meetings and using online collaborative tools. A detailed work plan will be shared at the kick-off meetings of each community of practice.
You can find more information here.
Stakeholders in your organisations are encouraged to express interest to join the communities of practice to provide ideas for the content of the codes through the surveys below. Note that participation in the communities of practice will not be remunerated and no costs will be reimbursed. You can express your interest to join the communities of practice and provide ideas for the content of the codes by 15th March 2023.
