Title: SFI SDG Challenge Workshop Support Scheme
TORA deadline: 28th June 2024, COB
Call deadline: 5th July 2024,1:00pm
The SFI SDG Challenge is intended to support highly motivated, interdisciplinary and international challenge teams, who together with beneficiaries, end-users and other stakeholders will identify and validate relevant, meaningful and important challenges, and co-create solutions that will maximise societal impact.
To facilitate this engagement, instigate team formation and seed idea generation, SFI and Irish Aid will provide limited financial support to organise networking events. Organisers are expected to include participants from potential partner countries, and are encouraged to engage with a broad network of innovators (including from outside of academia) that may help to strengthen the societal impact of applications to the programme. In organising such networking events, applicants are encouraged to consider their carbon footprint relating to travel, and consider options with lowest carbon impact. Departments, institutions and Research Centres are encouraged to apply, but individual researchers may also apply to organise such an event.
Requests may be made up to €5k and events should be of an appropriate scale to warrant support from SFI and Irish Aid. Awards may not be used to support activities of individual applicants in the preparation of their application.
If funded through this support scheme, networking events must take place before the application deadline of 8th October 2024.
For more information, see the call’s webpage here .

Title: COST Actions 2024
The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) is a funding organisation for the creation of research networks, called COST Actions. These networks offer an open space for collaboration among scientists across Europe (and beyond) and thereby give impetus to research advancements and innovation.
A COST Action is an interdisciplinary research network that brings researchers and innovators together to investigate a topic of their choice for four years. A COST Action can be in any scientific field. COST Actions are different to many other EU funded projects because it is possible to join and participate in a research network once it has started running. The COST programme does not fund research but provides support for networking activities carried out within COST Actions.
The 60 new COST Actions for 2024 were recently announced, and the full list can be found here. Please browse the Actions for any that may be in your research field and those you may wish to get involved with.
There are currently two ways to get involved with a 2024 Cost Action:
-
Working Groups: Individuals are free to make an application to join the working groups of all Actions directly through the COST portal.
-
Management Committee: Ireland can nominate two individuals to the management committee (MC). Nominations are made through the national contact point David Flood (david.Flood@enterprise-ireland.com). If you are interested in becoming an MC member please let Christina Rushe (christina.rushe@dcu.ie) know, and she can initiate the nomination process.
DCU Research Support held an information session on the COST Actions in May. For the recording of this session or the presentation slides, please contact Christina Rushe (christina.rushe@dcu.ie).
Title: COST Actions Open Call
TORA deadline: 16th October 2024
Call deadline: 23rd October 2024, 12:00pm CEST
Please see the above section on how to get involved in current COST Actions. If you have used the browse Actions tool on the website and cannot find any Actions in your field, you may consider proposing your own COST Action Network. The COST programme does not fund research but provides support for networking activities carried out within COST Actions.
Enterprise Ireland has a Coordinator Grant of up to €3,000 to pay a consultant/support staff to assist with proposal creation. The application for this is through the system SMARTSIMPLE.
The deadline for the 2024 Open Call for proposals is 23rd October 2024 at 12:00pm CEST.
For questions related to the Open Call please contact David Flood (david.Flood@enterprise-ireland.com), the COST National Coordinator, or Christina Rushe (christina.rushe@dcu.ie).
DCU Research Support held an information session in May on the COST Actions. For the recording of this session or the presentation slides, please contact Christina Rushe (christina.rushe@dcu.ie).
