Meet our Translation Studies Team

Research areas and activities in the Translation Studies Section (TSS)

DCU counts some of the leading researchers in Translation Studies in Europe among its staff. They are involved in research in Audiovisual Translation, Website Localisation, Translator Training, Computer-assisted Translation, Corpus-based Translation Studies, Literary Translation, Community Interpreting and Translation History.

Three research students in Translation Studies have been awarded prestigious postgraduate scholarships by the Irish Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHSS) for 2006/7.

Current projects in Translation Studies include:

  • E-learning for Translator Training: funded by The Japan Foundation.
  • MovieTrans: Rapid, Memory-based Audiovisual Translations (MovRat) is a project which aims to investigate the potential of data-driven machine translation for subtitling movies on DVD: funded by Enterprise Ireland under its Commercialisation Programme (Proof-of-Concept Phase).  
  • TransTrack  - Investigating translation processes and translator interaction with technology via an eye-tracker: funded by DCU.
  • Manga, Anime and Videogames: an interdisciplinary initiative in Japanese Studies, Multimedia and Translation: funded by DCU.
  • Community Interpreting (in the contexts of the Construction Industry and Mental Health): funded by DCU and IRCHSS.

There is an Advanced Translation Research Lab available to researchers in Translation Studies. It includes an eye-tracker, a flat-screen TV for audiovisual research, two workstations with state-of-the-art translation tools and an area for conducting interviews and focus groups.
