Olivia Sneyd, Education and Training
Why you chose DCU?
Being from Glasnevin, DCU has always been the dream college. After my Leaving Cert I did a PLC course and this is where the seed for wanting to teach in further education was planted. After some research I discovered the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Education and Training and knew this was something I was very much interested in as it is a very hands on course. I applied to DCU as a mature student and was invited for an interview and as they say the rest is history. But here I am going into 2nd year and absolutely loving it.
One unique thing about your course?
An unique aspect of Education and Training is the optional year placement in 3rd year. On completion of the placement year I will be registered with the Teaching Council of Ireland as a further education teacher. Personally, I feel this is an invaluable experience which will help you put everything you learned into the real world.
Best thing about DCU so far?
For me it has to be the homely feeling. DCU is like a small rural village in Ireland, everyone knows everyone and everyone takes care of one another. I've had experience of studying in other third level colleges in Ireland but I can honestly say I have never felt more at home than I do in DCU. As I said earlier, I came into DCU as a mature student and have found the support on offer to all DCU students, nothing less then incredible. It doesn't matter what your situation is, someone in DCU will be more than willing to help and support you.
Plans after DCU?
I'm going to go on a long holiday so I can celebrate graduating and to recharge my batteries. Then I'll come back to the real world and look for employment in a further education college or with probation services in Ireland.
