Why you chose DCU?

I first fell in love with DCU when my school brought us to one of the open days back when I was in fifth year. I knew immediately that I was seriously interested in studying here from the welcoming atmosphere and amazing facilities available, as well as having a huge interest in some of the courses in DCU. However, I wanted to keep my options open so I attended several other open days around the country. The following year I decided to come back to DCU on my own, with a specific course in mind, which ended up being my first choice on my CAO. I got the opportunity to talk to my future lecturers which cemented my decision. They were so approachable and honest. After this I knew my mind was made up and I was certain this was the college and course for me. All I had to do was get those points!

One unique part of your course

In first year as part of one module each of us had to complete 24 hours of voluntary work over the course of the semester. I was extremely excited when I heard I had this opportunity! I decided to participate in a soup run with a well known organization in Dublin city centre.  It was extremely insightful and most rewarding. I learned so much beyond the classroom. My classmates and I felt this was an amazing experience and opportunity to both give back and achieve a good grade in that module.

Best thing about DCU so far?

The best thing about DCU so far undoubtedly has to be the friends I’ve made and the unforgettable opportunities I’ve been given! DCU is one of those places where everyone mixes no matter what age you are or what course your doing or where you’re from. With all the various clubs and societies here, coupled with an open mind, you will get unlimited chances to try out so many new things and meet so many new people. For example, I never surfed a day in my life and I still went to on the annual ‘DCU surf n sail’ surf trip to Bundoran! One of the highlights of first year!

Plans after DCU?

As of now I don’t really want to think about my plans after DCU because I honestly hate the thought of leaving here so soon! On a serious note, I plan on doing a postgrad possibly in Occupational Therapy or Speech and Language Therapy,  as my course gives me direct access to these Master degrees! I also have the option to pursue a career in many other health care areas/professions, which I’m also thinking about. With the help of my lecturers and the amazing support team in DCU I’m confident I will be guided in the right direction.
