Exemptions

Procedures for students unable to wear face coverings or attend on-campus activities for medical reasons.

Face Coverings

If you are unable to wear a face covering due to a medical reason or condition, you may be able to wear a full face visor or face shield instead. These are not as effective as wearing a face covering, but it may offer some level of protection to those around you.

If you are unable to wear a face covering while on campus, you will need to register this with us. Please let us know by filling in the following form and we will inform relevant staff.

Students will be asked to provide documentation to support their request for a face covering exemption.

Personal data that you submit via this form to Student Support & Development (SS&D), a Unit within Dublin City University, the Data Controller, in connection with the ‘Face Covering Exemption’ procedure will be used solely to assess your eligibility to be face covering exempt while on campus and to inform relevant staff in the University that you are not obliged to wear one. Your information will be treated in accordance with the DCU Data Protection Policy which can be accessed at the following link: https://www.dcu.ie/sites/default/files/policy/25_-_data_privacy_policy_…

DCU shall only process such data for the purpose for which you provide it and to the extent necessary to process your application in line with the regulations attached to this procedure. You have the right to withdraw your consent to the processing and you also have the right to access any data you submit on request.  The data you submit will be held until such time as the face covering requirements have been lifted or when you graduate from the University. It will then be destroyed.

The personal data will be disclosed to staff of DCU who need to know that you are exempt from wearing a face covering while indoors. This will include your lecturing staff and staff in the library.

In the case of a student who is immunocompromised or in the high risk or very high risk category or who is living with a person who is immunocompromised or in the very high risk category, the relevant School will need to be aware in order to put alternative arrangements in place, where possible. Students will be asked to provide a letter from their GP or Consultant confirming that they are unable to attend on-campus activities.
