School Visits Programme

What is the School Visits Programme?

The School Visits Programme involves a member of our academic staff visiting schools to give a brief talk to Transition Year, Fifth Year and/or Sixth Year students on IT careers and our B.Sc. in Computer Applications degree. In many cases, we can arrange for one of our current students (some of whom may be former pupils of your own) to go along and give a student's perspective. The presentation can last from 10 to 40 minutes, as you wish. A typical half-hour talk, for example, uses the following elements:

  • 10 minute DVD presentation on careers in IT, interviews with DCU Computer Applications students and graduates, and projected skills requirements in years to come. This DVD, "IT4U", has been produced jointly by DCU and the HEA.

  • 10 minute talk on our B.Sc. in Computer Applications degree.
  •
  • 10 minutes for any questions students might have.
  • We tailor the presentation to suit your needs.

    Programme Aims

  • Supported by the Higher Education Authority, the programme aims to provide students with an insight into the variety of careers available to IT graduates. Recent government reports (most notably, the Fourth Report of the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs, October 2003) predict that the country is facing a significant IT skills shortage in the years to come, so we are keen to remind students of the benefits of computing as a career option.
  • The programme also aims to inform students considering a career in computing of the main features of our B.Sc. in Computer Applications degree.
  • When?

In short, whenever suits you best! The talk might take place within a scheduled careers class or perhaps during lunchtime - depending on which option best fits your schedule.
