Developing an effective system

There is more to successful listening and note-taking than what you do in lectures. This section will outline a series of steps that you can take to enhance your skills under the headings ‘before the lecture’, ‘during the lecture’, ‘after the lecture’, and ‘periodically’.

  1. Before the lecture

    • Develop a mind-set geared toward listening.
    • Read over your notes from the previous lecture while waiting for the next one to begin.
    • Skim any notes that are available before the lecture (e.g. on Moodle) for key points.
    • Skim relevant reading assignments to acquaint yourself with main ideas, new technical terms, etc.
    • Enhance your physical and mental alertness: eat a snack before class, sit in the front and/or centre of the room, and focus your attention on the speaker.
    • Choose notebooks that will enhance your systematic note-taking: a separate notebook with full-sized pages is recommended for each course. You might wish to mark off the pages into one of the formats suggested later in this unit.
    • INTEND TO LISTEN.
    • Be prepared and on time! Paper, pen(s), etc.
