Introduction: the importance of understanding the differences between learning in university and prior learning experiences

Before beginning it is important to say that most students ultimately succeed with their studies in university. All students struggle from time to time but university learning is meant to be challenging: otherwise you would not gain much from it. It is important to be aware that learning at university differs in a number of respects from your previous learning experiences. However, there are steps you can take to improve your learning and get the most from your time. Unfortunately, though, there is no simple set of study techniques that will suit every student. Over time, and with help, guidance and support from your School(s), student support services and fellow students, you will discover what works best for you in particular situations within your chosen discipline(s).

Before you read any further take a moment to think about what might be different about University learning as compared to your past experiences.
