Changes in assessment procedures and expectations of instructors

At university you have much more responsibility for keeping track of your own progress. It may be that no one will look closely at how your studies are going until you start completing assignments.

Understanding how to do really good work within a particular subject area is a skill that develops gradually over time. Often these assignments may have long timescales. The reason for this is to allow you sufficient time to read up, think and investigate before putting pen to paper.

Suggestions

  1. Try not to fall into the trap of putting off doing the work thinking you have lots of time.
  2. Be clear about what is required.
  3. When you get feedback on your first few pieces of work think carefully about whether you fully understand what needs to be done to improve. If not, seek clarification.
  4. Go through the unit under the heading ‘Making the grade: assessments, assignments and exams’.
