Tips for becoming a successful online learner at DCU: Make the most of online time

Schedule online time

The time management strategies discussed in the unit, 'Organising and Managing your Time', also apply to learning online. In addition, there may be other distractions to consider when working online, including the lure of online games; personal email; and social networking sites such as Facebook and Bebo. When working online try to stick to the task at hand and avoid opening any sites that may act as a distraction.

If you are required to participate in online activities then set aside time for these, just as you would with other activities. If you are sharing a computer with flatmates or family members then try to negotiate and schedule ‘your’ time on the computer with them.

If you are required to use Moodle or another online tool as part of an assessment, make sure that you are familiar with the procedures for using them well in advance of the deadline.
