Summary

A number of factors that affect motivation levels have been outlined in this unit together with possible strategies to address each. In most cases good planning, clear goals, prioritised task lists and well-designed, detailed time schedules which can be revised from time to time will prove to be the best solutions to staying motivated. Knowing more about yourself is one of the key factors to overcoming periods of de-motivation. A positive attitude will also help! Below you will find two activities related to motivation and procrastination. If, after working through this unit, you are worried and anxious about procrastination, make an appointment to see a Counsellor.

An on-line exercise in motivating yourself

This activity is quite long – there are seven stages to the exercise as follows:
1.Definition 2.Intrinsic motivation 3.Extrinsic motivation 4.Project description 5.Mentoring 6.Progress 7.Conclusion/Evaluation

Concluding remarks

Now that you understand what causes your de-motivation and procrastination and how you can greatly reduce its influence in your life, you will experience more freedom, a healthy feeling of being in charge of your life and greater personal satisfaction. However, you will need to keep working on it. You will still procrastinate and feel de-motivated from time to time but you should now be able to resolve the situation faster. This in turn will increase your self-confidence and peace of mind. When you do succeed, take time to savour the moment and reward yourself so that you will remember how good it feels. This will help you the next time you need encouragement. Treat the discovery process like a game and have some fun!
