Insurance

As a DCU student, you are covered free of charge by Accidental Bodily Injury Insurance. This cover is worldwide and applies three hundred and sixty-five days a year, irrespective of whether you are involved in a university activity or not.

As with any scheme, there are some provisos and full details should be sought from the Finance Office before presuming the cover is adequate for your needs. Insurance cover for part-time and Erasmus students is restricted to official university activities only. If you are working or studying abroad during your degree programme, you are strongly advised to secure private travel insurance for the duration of your trip. If you are a Non-EU student, you are required, by law, to obtain private medical insurance prior to arriving in Ireland.

Please note there is an initial €100 excess and that any potential claim should be notified in-person to a DCU staff member and by completing a DCU accident report form (https://www.dcu.ie/safety/report-accidentincidentnear-miss). Should there be potential for medical costs beyond the excess you should complete and submit the AIG claim form (please see below) at the earliest possible time to the Insurance Manager along with any supporting documentation.

Health Insurance

Private health insurance provides assistance in covering medical and hospital costs whilst you are in Ireland. The Irish Immigration Service requires students from outside the EU /EEA to obtain private health insurance for visa application and immigration registration purposes. Dublin City University does not arrange health insurance for students.

There are a number of Insurance providers in Ireland who can provide cover, if you cannot obtain a suitable policy from your home country.

The main providers of cover in Ireland are:

·   VHI: www.vhi.ie/internationalstudents

·   Laya Healthcare: www.layahealthcare.ie

·   Irish Life: www.irishlife.ie

·   Study and Protect: Study & Protect (studyandprotect.com)

There are different levels of cover available, which provide different levels of benefit under the policy and Students are advised to familiarise themselves with the cover types available.  Students are reminded that it is their responsibility to ensure that they obtain a policy which satisfies both their VISA requirements and personal requirements in advance of arrival in Ireland and to ensure that they have adequate cover in place for the duration of their time as resident in Ireland.

Further information on health insurance in Ireland, including a comparison tool is available through the Health Insurance Authority website: www.hia.ie
