Academic biography

Dr. Marco Viola is an Assistant Professor in Mathematics at the School of Mathematical Sciences at Dublin City University (DCU). He earned his PhD in Operations Research from Sapienza University of Rome in 2019. Prior to joining DCU, he was a Professor in Applied and Computational Mathematics at University College Dublin (UCD) and an Assistant Professor at the University of Campania L. Vanvitelli. Throughout his career, he has cultivated an international research network and held roles as visiting scholar at institutions such as Johns Hopkins University, the University of Florida, and he Technical University of Ostrava. He maintains a robust publication record and has published in prestigious venues like SIAM Review, Mathematical Programming, and the SIAM Journal on Optimization,. He actively serves as a peer reviewer for leading optimization and computational mathematics journals.

Research interests

Dr Viola's research focuses on the theoretical development and practical implementation of algorithms within numerical optimization. He is specifically interested in designing efficient, mathematically guaranteed methods to address large-scale computational challenges.

A significant portion of Dr Viola's work is dedicated to machine learning. deep learning, and image processing applications. He investigates the application of advanced optimization paradigms - such as second-order optimisation methods and bilevel optimisation - to improve the reliability and efficiency of deep neural network training. Additionally, he works on the application of continuous optimization techniques to the solution of problems in image processing such as segmentation, restoration, and reconstruction.
