Early childhood education, care and development (ECECD) plays a pivotal role in human development. Programmes and policies targeting young children have far-reaching impacts on their future and society as a whole. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal framework embraces the importance of ECECD and advocates for sustained and comprehensive action (SDG 4, target 4.2). In addition to SDG 4, ECECD is a powerful and effective enabler for achieving other goals in the SDG framework: poverty reduction, hunger, health (including child mortality), gender equality, water and sanitation, reduced inequality and peace, and justice and strong institutions. These goals are not only complementary but can also be simultaneously enacted. The international community was failing to achieve the 2030 targets even before the pandemic. Now they are at risk of being deferred or further delayed. This international event aims to discuss the role of integrated early childhood policies in building sustainable systems that are resilient to emergencies and disruptions. This event builds on prior G20 and T20 communiqués that acknowledge the importance of comprehensive ECECD policy approaches. Emphasising the priority T20 Saudi Arabia has given to early childhood, this event provides a forum for a transdisciplinary conversation about ECECD in the context of the current and future emergencies.
