Reimagining educational assessment in the age of AI
On Friday 14 June, the Centre for Assessment Research, Policy and Practice in Education (CARPE) at the Institute of Education in Dublin City University welcomed Professor Phillip Dawson (Deakin University, Australia) for a special seminar titled “Reimagining Assessment in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”. The event brought together academic and professional staff from across DCU's Institute of Education, with an engaging and timely presentation on how generative AI challenges traditional assessment practices and how institutions can adapt to ensure meaningful, inclusive, and valid assessment.
Professor Dawson, an internationally recognised expert on assessment, academic integrity, and digital learning, offered both strategic insights and practical guidance. His keynote was followed by a panel discussion chaired by Dr Paula Lehane (CARPE), with contributions from colleagues representing several Irish institutions (QQI, Nain, Microsoft Ireland, CARPE). The session sparked rich dialogue about the role of higher education in supporting assessment redesign in the context of rapid technological change.
The visit also reinforced the collaboration between CARPE and international thought leaders in educational assessment, in line with our mission to inform policy and practice through research-led dialogue.
