The DCU Student Recruitment team brings you a series of podcasts with DCU students talking about their course of study. Each podcast goes through a number of areas that may help you in your own research on choosing a college course.
TeamDCU podcast host, Leanne Hanafin, is an Alumna of DCU graduating with a BA in Communication Studies in 2019. During her undergraduate studies, she was a Student Ambassador, as well as being involved with DCU clubs and societies including the Media Production Society, DCU Ladies Football club and the Mental Health Society. Leanne can be heard presenting on SPIN1038 and FRQ.fm, and does the sound operating for Off The Ball.

Bachelor of Business Studies
Providing you with the essential toolkit for the world of business
This is DCU’s largest, most flexible and popular business degree, offering you a strong foundation in all aspects of business with the chance to specialise in your final year. It is designed to build your understanding in the foundations of business and guide you to a specialisation in economics, management, finance, marketing or HR over the course of 3 or 4 years. You’ll also have the option to spend 11 months on work placement as part of our INTRA work placement programme.
We’ve recently updated our curriculum with a number of new elements such as a new two-week introductory programme in Business Studies at the start of a first year. Our new Learning Innovation for Enterprise programme lasts all of first year and students get to join lots of entrepreneurship events throughout the city as part of Start-Up Week Dublin and even get to do a Hackathon.

Develop an interest in business and solving problems.
DCU’s BA in Accounting and Finance course is one of DCU’s longest-running and most popular courses.
The course takes you from an introduction to accounting basics, through to more complex theoretical and practical accounting studies. You’ll also explore a myriad of other topics, including issues concerning business, law, IT, taxation, auditing, professional ethics, economics, corporate finance, investments, psychology, marketing, HR, management, and communications.
Graduates are granted generous exemptions from the examinations of professional accountancy bodies. In terms of employers you can choose from professional accountancy practices, industry, financial services and the public service, nationally and internationally.

BSc in Aviation Management (Pilot Studies or Air Traffic Control Specialisms)
We will educate you for the exciting world of aviation!
The BSc in Aviation Management course is designed so that the first three years of the course provide you with a general introduction to business analysis, the aviation sector, technical aspects of piloting and industry relevant work experience through our famous INTRA programme. In your final year, you can opt to enter either flight training to qualify as a commercial pilot or choose to follow more specialist studies in aviation management. Additionally, this year we have also developed a pathway to become an air traffic controller through this programme.

Bachelor of Business Studies International
Be unique. Take a degree in International Business AND be proficient in a second language!
Studying a language along with your business degree is one of the most valuable things you can do in a world where business is ever more globally connected. The Business Studies International degree is designed to create dynamic and resourceful business people who are confident working across cultures. You’ll study a range of business, language and cultural topics, and develop essential business skills in communication, information technology, teamwork, and problem solving—all vital for success in today’s global business environment.
You’ll also acquire proficiency in the foreign language of your choice (French, German, Spanish, Chinese or Japanese) and spend a year studying in a country where your chosen language is spoken. BA Global Business
Two business degrees, two countries, two work placements. Plus proficiency in a second language!
The BA in Global Business courses offer a unique, competitive and highly rewarding opportunity to participate in two work placements and earn two business degrees in two countries. In your four years, you’ll gain the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of the diverse world of business by immersing yourself in another culture and developing a global business outlook.
You spend your first two years at DCU, gaining an understanding of the principles of business by studying subjects such as accounting, finance, economics and marketing. On transferring to the partner institution in Year Three, you will focus on international business and in Year Four, you have the opportunity to specialise in a variety of business areas.

BSc in Analytical Science
Analysis, detection and measurement – solve problems of critical importance.
The BSc in Analytical Science is one of DCU’s longest running offerings here in the Faculty of Science and Health.
The course is delivered by academics from the School of Chemical Sciences, one of Ireland's most progressive and highest achieving Schools with outstanding facilities.
We employ an interdisciplinary approach, educating you on both theoretical and practical aspects of chemical, biochemical and microbiological analysis and we will prepare you to use principles of several branches of chemistry and advanced equipment to measure and interpret matter.
Our INTRA work placement programme provides students with unrivalled industry experience and we have a close relationship with our industry partners, particularly as many of our graduates are now employed in the companies where they completed their INTRA placement.

BSc in Science Education
Be part of the next generation of inspiring second level science teachers.
Mathematics and science play essential roles in our everyday lives, and we are proud to say our graduate teachers work every day to secure Ireland’s future by educating young citizens to be informed decision makers and scientists that are innovative and creative.
DCU’s Science Education course is unique in providing students with the opportunity to participate in a STEM Teacher Internship Programme, a paid industry placement, which aims to prepare young teachers to educate their future students about career paths in STEM.
On successful completion of the programme, graduates can directly register with the Teaching Council as qualified to teach two subjects from Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, to Leaving Certificate Level. BSc in Physical Education
Physical Education: make it an essential part of our children’s education and development.
The BSc in Physical Education with Mathematics course is one of DCU’s most popular offerings. The course is delivered through a mix of applied physical education classes, laboratories, lectures, tutorials and seminars and small classes allow for individual attention from attentive, approachable staff. This gives you the opportunity to work closely with some of Ireland’s most prominent experts in the area of PE.
To put everything you learn into practice and provide you with experience, you’ll be placed in schools during Years Two, Three and Four.
Graduates are qualified to teach general science to Junior Certificate level, and PE and Mathematics to Leaving Certificate level, and a number go on to careers in coaching, sports development or further education. Bachelor of Early Childhood Education
Provide high-quality early education and care for young children.
Gaining a qualification in the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education with DCU can help you to make a positive difference to the lives of children and their families and provide you with a broad range of career opportunities.
Bachelor of Early Childhood Education students enjoy a great mix of academic and social life on the DCU St Patrick’s Campus. Students have whole class lectures but also experience a lot of work in small groups, so you get to know everyone and we get to know you. It also gives you an opportunity to have some hands-on experiences - building with Lego and Bee-Bots in early maths, visiting parks as part of your outdoor play module, exploring science activities, engaging in art experiences and creating music resources that support you in working with young children.
Much of the assessment on the course is continual and while we have some examinations, students are encouraged to undertake ongoing project work, contribute to online discussion forums, create literacy resources, design and present posters, as well as developing curriculum and play plans over the term.
Students say that one of the best things about the course is placement. From Year One, you will put your learning into practice by working as part of a professional team in early childhood settings. You will also have opportunities to undertake placement in policy and support organisations, family support agencies, special needs schools and statutory bodies where you will learn about the important behind-the-scenes work related to children’s wellbeing, learning and development. You can study and gain invaluable experience as part of DCU’s Erasmus experience abroad in Year Three - from Norwegian outdoor Kindergartens or full day care settings in the historic city of Ghent in Belgium.
Some of DCU’s current graduates are using their pedagogical or teaching skills here at home as well as abroad in places such as the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand. Our Alumni are working in the areas of Special Needs, Child and Family Support, Early Intervention programmes and Childcare Committees. Some have gone on to take up highly coveted internships in Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) and others have pursued Master’s programmes for primary teaching, psychology and family support.

BA in International Relations
Calling all curious, open-minded, independent thinkers who want to know how the world really works (and how to change it) – this is the degree course with global career opportunities for you.
The International Relations degree will give you insight into the major world issues that challenge and fascinate us today. You will examine the forces that shape contemporary societies, such as globalisation, international law, third-world debt and American foreign policy. You will also study key institutions like the European Union and the United Nations.
You will learn from staff with expertise in areas such as Terrorism and Counter-terrorism, European Union studies, Middle-Eastern studies, International Security and Conflict Studies, International Law and Aid, and Development Studies.
The programme also prepares you for the workforce by imparting broader abilities, such as oral and written communication skills, the capacity to think analytically, teamwork skills, and research techniques.
The BA in International Relations is normally a three-year course. However, you may elect to spend an extra year abroad in one of our partner universities in China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and the USA. You can also opt to apply for a year-long INTRA work placement in year three.

BA in Economics, Politics and Law
Understand the political, legal and economic institutions that shape the current global environment
The BA in Economics, Politics and Law (EPL) is an exciting degree that will give you a strong foundation in all three disciplines of economics, politics and law and will prepare you to work in a number of associated fields.
The EPL degree will challenge you to explore how its key disciplines interact in contemporary Irish society and how they shape the current global environment. You will also gain an understanding of how economics, politics and law are inextricably bound together and how they can be applied to real world situations. This extremely versatile degree can be exercised in a number of professions.
The course can be completed in three years or in four with an optional third year abroad in the US, France, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Turkey, Denmark, Sweden or a one of a selection of other locations. You can also opt to apply for a year-long INTRA work placement in year three.

BA in Communication Studies
People, society, media – explore the world of communications!
The BA in Communication Studies will give you a thorough understanding of the role communications play in local, national and international settings by teaching you how to think critically about communication in its various forms. It will also introduce you to the varied careers available to graduates and help you decide which interests you most.
The degree includes foundation, core, production and optional modules in performance, audio, imaging and video, giving you a grounding in critical understanding of communication as well as hands-on experience.
