The DCU BSc in Science Education provides students with aTeaching Council accredited concurrent degree qualification in post-primary initial teacher education which combines the study of three curricular subjects with teacher education studies. On successful completion of the programme,graduates can directly register with the Teaching Council as qualified to teachtwo subjects from Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry, to Leaving Certificate Level.

Mathematics and science play essential roles in our everyday lives, and as a second level teacher, you’ll be securing Ireland’s future by developing citizens that are informed decision makers and scientists that are innovative and creative. The programme is delivered by interdisciplinary team of discipline experts from across DCU Institute of Education and Faculty of Science and Health, thus acquiring scientific and mathematical knowledge along with educational expertise.  Students registered on the programme also benefit from the unique opportunity to participate in the STEM Teacher Internship Programme - an initiative developed by DCU, Accenture and 30% Club that facilitates DCU STEM teachers completing a 12 week paid internship in industry during summer of third year.

Student Voice

I graduated from DCU in 2015 as a qualified Physics and Mathematics teacher. As a newly qualified teacher, I was confident in my knowledge and abilities and took on a teaching position in Bahrain, where I had to teach a new curriculum (A-level and AP), in a different culture, in subjects both within and outside my specialism (Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology) and to students at a range of different levels (primary: 7-10yr olds and secondary: 11-18yr olds).Within two years of living and working abroad, I was mentoring and training other teachers, from several different cultural backgrounds and qualifications, in integrated learning technology and classroom management techniques. I was involved in continuous curriculum development of the chemistry curriculum and the preparation of in-house exam questions in Sabis schools across the Middle East. For me, the structure and content of the Science Education at DCU, distributed teaching placement along with co-development of subject and pedagogic knowledge, gave me an extensive skill set, and has enabled me to pursue a range of career opportunities.

About the course

In first year, most science and mathematics modules will be taken in common with other first-year science students. There are also further specialist modules in mathematics and education.

The second and third years build on this content and integrate science and mathematics with education.

At the start of the third year, you choose two subjects to specialise in (chemistry/physics, mathematics/ physics or chemistry/mathematics). You’ll be qualified to teach both of your two specialty subjects to honours Leaving Certificate level.

In your fourth year, you’ll continue with your two chosen subjects. A quarter of the course is devoted to education, particularly science education, while the remainder focuses on two of three subjects, physics, chemistry and mathematics, with additional courses provided in biology and IT.

There are four important school placement periods over the duration of the course, allowing you to practice and develop the teaching skills you’ve learnt in a real classroom environment. In Year One, you teach small groups of students from local schools. In Year Two, you spend four weeks in post-primary schools, taking classes up to Junior Certificate level. A further four-week placement takes place in the September immediately preceding Year Three. Finally, all of the second semester in Year Four is spent taking junior and senior cycle classes in science, mathematics, physics and/or chemistry.

Garda vetting has been introduced for students who have unsupervised access to children and vulnerable adults as part of their studies at Dublin City University. Applicants must successfully pass the Garda vetting process in order to complete the process of registration.

DCU Science Education graduates are actively sought after by Principals both in Ireland and internationally. The majority of our graduates take up careers in post-primary education, teaching two of chemistry, physics or mathematics, as well as Junior Cycle science and mathematics. Other graduates have pursued careers in industry-based training and development.

Leaving Certificate

In addition to the general entry requirements for admission to the university the following entry requirements apply

Minimum of O1 or H6 in Mathematics and minimum of O4 or H6 in one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics with Chemistry or Agricultural Science.

GCE A Level

In addition to the general entry requirements for admission to the university the following entry requirements apply

GCE A Level D or GCE AS Level C Mathematics and GCE A Level D or GCE AS Level C in one of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics with Chemistry, Agricultural Science or Environmental Technology.

Transfer Applications

Applications are welcomed from students who have studied at Level 6 and Level 7 in relevant areas. Such transfer students may be exempt from certain modules.

International Applications

International candidates are expected to have educational qualifications of a standard equivalent to those outlined above. In addition, where such candidates are non-native speakers of the English language they must satisfy the university of their competency in the English language.
